My Plan for 2012

2012 is upon us. I finally got around to blogging more frequently again after posting less and less here so I feel revitalized. I write more in my personal journal these days, but when I have an interesting insight, I turn to this blog. Although I think the Mayan legend for the year 2012 is interesting, I don't think we have to worry about the world ending. God will decide the year, month, day, hour, minute when he will come again to judge the living and the dead.

The Setup
[^] - accomplished
[-] - not accomplished

Previous goals for 2011:
01. Get my career back on course (whatever occupation that may be) [^]
I had some ups and downs this year. I worked harder than I ever have before and surprised myself. One thing I could continue to remind myself is to make sure my goals are in sync with the company's goals to eliminate communication issues that are out of context.
02. Get my responsibilities in check; have a structured & organized mind. [^]
Using Google Calendar and a personal planner from Franklin Covey has helped me get more accomplished, but it's been easy to get overwhelmed. I slacked in my online education at the start and had to rush to finish before the New Year. I didn't quit meet the deadline and burned myself out. I have to refocus and get re-inspired to get momentum again.
03. Be more romantic, seductive, kind, and playful. [-]
I know I frequently say how marriage has been tough the last few years. I think this year was one of the hardest because of the intensive fast track online certificate program that I started left little attention for the marriage and our connection suffered in consequence. I did however learn more about my actions and reactions and hope to chalk it up to marital growing pains. 2012 we both should be done with school so we can concentrate on enjoying our lives again and each other. I hope with the new free time we'll be able to reconnect and heal.
04. Be more social, hang with friends more, get off the couch. [-]
I planned and hosted my first big bday for my wife who just turned 30 and enjoyed various other parties. Hosting a Sangria party in January to help clear out our wine collection was a success and am thinking about doing it again. I enjoyed all the company, but wish I had closer buddies to hang with outside of the marriage.
05. Be a better cook. I have pasta down, now to expand to beef and fish. [-]
Due to my school plans this one also fell by the wayside. I ended up getting take out constantly. Hopefully after the first half life will slow down and I can learn to cook more dishes.
06. Be physically active: hike, camp, surf, tennis, roller blade, and run. [-]
Although I ran and rollerbladed in two half-marathons, I can't say I was active as I should have been. I have my wife to thank for keeping me committed to running long runs on Sundays.
07. Declutter Christmas junk; donate extra computer/gaming junk. [-/^]
I did get rid of some things, but not nearly enough. We accumulated more Christmas decorations this year, so I will have to find room for it next year.
08. Read 5-10 books. (Thanks DVR to eating all my time) [^]
I read more self-help/relationship books this year and can say that has helped my maturity grow.
09. Visit my sister-in-law (now living) in Europe. [-]
Didn't have the vacation time to do it, but my wife did go on a west side Caribbean cruise in late August.

My goals for 2012:

01. Live Don Miguel Ruiz's Four Agreements
02. Learn to forgive, let go, accept I can't change others, only myself.
03. Judge and gossip less. Laugh, love and enjoy my 30s.
04. No More Excuses. Use self-discipline to keep my word and deadlines.
05. Declutter 2.0: Use "Organizing Solutions" to clear out space.
06. Finish my Digital Media certificate program by Summer and on time.
07. Volunteer at REI and/or Julian's Wolf Encounter.
08. Donate $50 to Julian's Wolf Encounter.
09. Write my sponsored kid in Africa.
10. Procrastinate less. Strive towards finishing, not perfection.
10. Continue developing/rebranding my portfolio website.
11. Storyboard/Film/Edit more video
12. Practice After Affects special effects for intros, transitions, outros.
13. Try to be a better cook again. Expand beyond pasta.
14. Go hiking more and attempt a backpacking trip.
15. Travel to Rome, Florence, and Greek islands in the Fall.
16. Find Inner Peace with stress & relaxation techniques.
17. Set aside more money for a house down payment.

Long-term goals:
Build integrity.

Bottom line:
I list more goals this year than ever because I want 2012 to be productive and fun. I finally got my career back on track, now to continue building integrity so that my actions are in line with my words. If I say I'm going to commit to something; truly commit to it. Deal with stress more efficiently so I don't fall into the vicious work hard, burnout and crash cycle. By balancing my commitments and knowing when to say no, I can live my responsibilities with a lot less stress.

What will you do in 2012?
